Choose how to begin

On any given Monday, you might start by responding to other texts, which is another way to say that you might begin your week by reading, then adding comments in two blog posts by your peers in your personal learning network.

You might also want to begin your week by responding to an image. If you have a question (from your 10 self/10 world questions) and a keyword (e.g. relationships, Iraq, video games, politics...) in mind, you can search for a Creative Commons image to jump-start this week's blog past.

A third and most common way to begin each week is by producing text. Choose one of your 10 self/10 world questions, and freewrite about that questions in Docs.

Once you have your Google Reader set up, you might also choose to begin your week by responding to feeds. That is, take time to carefully read a few recent blog posts, news items, or articles about your inquiry. Copy specific quotes from these readings and write responses.

A fifth option might be to start your week by responding to audio. Be sure to keep notes in Docs and write responses as you listen to podcasts that you have subscribed to using Google Reader.

Follow these steps to subscribe to some of the podcasts that our students listen to. These directions will help you subscribe to the shared subscriptions.

1. Open Youth Podcasts. This is the page listing the subscriptions. You will need to save, rename and then upload this file.
2 Save this page to your folder or desktop BUT before you save, change format to All Files, change the file name extension: .html to .opml and delete the space in the file name.
3. Import the file YouthPodcasts.opml into your feed reader. This is how you do it: 4. Open your Google Reader.
5. At the bottom of the left blue navigation bar, click on the link, Manage subscriptions OR click on the Settings link on the upper right hand corner of the screen. Both clicks take you to the same window.
6. Click on the Import/Export tab.
7. Click on Browse and choose YouthPodcasts.opml
8. Click Upload. Now you are subscribed to the shared podcasts.

Note: To add your own choices of subscriptions, just look for the rss orange button or copy the URL of the xml page for a site that has a feed and paste it into the Add Subscription box.
