The Great Gatsby and Nirvana

Nirvana-1017

The Great Gatsby and Nirvana

“ It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. No Amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.”(pg.95-96)

“She has me like a Pisces when I am weak, I've been locked inside your Heart-Shaped box for weeks, I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap, I wish I could Eat your cancer when you turn black. Hey! Wait! I've got a new complaint. Forever in debt to your priceless advice.” Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped box"

Connection: As Nirvana refers to being trapped in a heart shaped box Nick refers to  Gatsby as having a ghostly heart. As we read in the novel Gatsby is obsessed with Daisy and the idea of re-living the past with her. Through out the song Nirvana mentions being “ forever in debt”, Which I feel is how Gatsby feels towards Daisy since he left to go into the military. Gatsby once he get back from the military feels “ forever in debt” to try and win Daisy back by having these lavish parties just to hope he will see her again. When Nirvana also says “ I’ve been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap” thats related to Gatsby’s five year obsession with Daisy.
