First taste of Re-education

The narrator and his friend Luo are sent to be re-educated in a village on the mountain called "Phoenix of the Sky." The villagers are bewildered by the civilization surrounding the boys, including the narrator's violin and Lu's alarm clock. Everyday the unfortunate boys are forced to carry both human and animal waste on their backs.

Phoenix of the Sky is an example of poetic fear.
The Picture above is an artistic representation of a phoenix, a mythological bird said to be born of ashes. It is rumored to be immortal and is a symbol of re-birth. The two boys are being re-educated, such as a Phoenix is re-born.  In another sense, the Phoenix is born from fire, therefore symbolizing the fear that the mountain induces.  (picture at http://www.quizilla.com/user_images/L/LA/LAD/LadyTigerEyes/1132013831_es2phoenix.jpg)
