The first thing that happens to Luo and the narrator is what could be called the "violin debacle". They had just arrived at their village for the first time and their posessions were inspected. The village headman saw the narrator's violin, and after a thourough inspection, called it "
a bourgeois toy". After a few tense moments, Luo came to the instrument's rescue, pointing out the obvious fact that it was a violin and that the narrator was
a good musician. He nearly came to regret those words, as he said the narrator would play a
Mozart Sonata. This obviously causes an uproar, but Luo quickly modifies the title, keeping the situation in check.
