Luo and The Narrator are sent to work in the
old coal mines. There they cheated death every time they emerged alive, pushing their buckets in front of them. Many experienced men had been
killed in these mines, and the two friends were marked physicaly and mentally from these two months when they dragged buckets of coal through dark, wet, and treacherous tunnels. It became a daily game of Russian Roulette. Then, Luo got
malaria and had to discontinue his work due to the sickness. This coincides with Luo's eerie prediction that, "I've had this idea stuck in my head: that I'm going to die in this mine." (32)
